Lance Armstrong; Collaborator-Sally Jenkins; Designer-Donna Sinisgalli Every Second Counts Broadway 2003-10-07 0385508719 / 9780385508711 Hardcover New Hardcover Alden’s Books is a non-profit organization. Profits are donated to charitable organizations. This first edition copy of Lance Armstrong’s bestseller is unique and very special. In July, 2005, Gabriele Pietsch, the mother of Alden Pietsch-Ng, discovered she had terminal lung cancer. Alden was away in Germany for a foreign exchange student program and didn’t know about his mother’s condition; he found out as soon as he came back from Munich, Germany. As Alden’s father, Gabriele told me. Neither Gabriele nor I knew the extent of her condition. She was hoping to see Alden graduate from high school in 2006. I went to Alexandria, VA, on a business trip in the early part of August, 2005, leaving both Gabriele and Alden in Oak Park. While in Alexandria, I visited Chris Myers, the owner of Trader’s Library, an online seller of investment books. Chris told me he knew Lance Armstrong personally. I asked Chris if he could get Lance to autograph one of his books for Gabriele and send it to her. I knew Gabriele admired Lance for beating his own cancer so I thought the gesture would encourage her to fight her own cancer. Upon knowing of Gabriele’s fall into consciousness I rushed back to Oak Park to be with Gabriele. I arrived on August 14, a Sunday morning at 9 am local time. She was unconscious but she knew I was there. Alden related to me that she saw Gabriele shed tears when I entered her hospital room. Gabriele died an hour later on August 14, 2005. The flatsigned book arrived by DHL Express on August 18, 2005, four days after she died. The book is not addressed to Gabriele by Lance, but the enclosed packaging from DHL and the WayBill with addressee is still attached, unopened since it arrived. Included in the packaging is a signed notecard from Doug Ulman, Director of Survivorship of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, dated August 12, 2005 that states: “Everyone at LAF is thinking about you! Please let us know if we can help in any way.” Included in the packaging is an 8x11 printed photo of Lance Armstrong and a yellow colored Lance Armstrong Foundation wristband. Your purchase of this collectible item will be donated to charitable causes to help troubled teenagers. Price:

Mark Twain Joan of Arc: Personal Recollections Gramercy 9/20/1995 0517147777 / 9780517147771 Hardcover Used: Very Good Hardcover Alden's Books is non-profit organization that donates profits to charities. Your purchases help our causes. Very few people know that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important but also his best work. He spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides, the French and the English. Because of Mark Twain's antipathy to institutional religion, one might expect an anti-Catholic bias toward Joan or at least toward the bishops and theologians who condemned her. Instead one finds a remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers. The very fact that Mark Twain wrote this book and wrote it the way he did is a powerful testimony to the attractive power of the Catholic Church's saints. This is a book that really will inform and inspire. Price:
